  • Bolton analysis is used to identify any occlusal misfit that is caused by tooth size discrepancy, estimate overbite, overjet relationships, determine the effects of contemplated extractions on posterior occlusion and help in guiding orthodontic treatment planning in order to achieve optimal occlusion at the end of orthodontic therapy. The aim of the investigation was to compare tooth size discrepancy among different malocclusion groups.
The study employed pre-treatment study models of 90 patients selected from the records of the Orthodontic Department, RSGM UNPAD. There were 30 Angle Class I, 30 Class II, and 30 Class III malocclusion patients. The mesio-distal dimensions of teeth were measured by using digital caliper with accuracy 0.01 mm. Anterior and overall ratios were calculated. Statistical analysis of the data was undertaken using normality test with Shapiro-Wilk method, Mann-Whitney Test and independent t-test.
Statistically significant differences were found for the whole sample, where anterior and overall ratios were greater in Angle Class III (anterior ratio: 79,75% and overall ratio: 93,72%) followed by Class I (anterior ratio: 77,73% and overall ratio: 91,67%) and Class II (anterior ratio: 75,73% and overall ratio: 89,29%) malocclusion groups, respectively.
There were significant differences of tooth size discrepancy among different malocclusion groups.
