  • In Indonesia, Micro-Small-Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) has a significant
role in economic growth and job creation, and so does the micro and small size
enterprise in manufacturing industry sector (a.k.a. Micro and Small
Industry=MSI). Therefore, government has tried to maintain and enhance the
role of MSI in Indonesia. Many goverment policies are implemented to develop
the MSI, but some problems still exist. Those problems cause the low
competitiveness of Indonesia SME among Asia Countries. The number of MSI
increases, the number of employee in MSI increases, but the number of output
decreases. It shows that there is decreasing on MSI performance from number of
    output point of view.

Studies on MSI performances have been developed in many countries.

They show that MSI performances are significantly influenced by some economic
variables. What about Indonesia MSI? So, there is a question addressed in this
research: what are economic variables influencing Indonesia MSI performance?

This research uses micro-size industry and small-size industry value added
as MSI performance proxies as dependent variables and 10 economic variables as
independent variables. Secondary data are used and collected from 33 provinces
during 2013-2015. Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics using Linear
Seemingly Unrelated Regression (Linear-SUR) Analysis are used to answer the
research question and to test the hypotheses,

Descriptive analysis result shows that there is a gap on MSI value added,
number of deposit, number of employee, and number of enterprises among Java
Provinces and Non-Java Provinces. It shows that MSI development focuses in
Jawa Provinces, especially in Central Java, East Jawa, and West Jawa.

Inferential analysis result shows that four variables influence significantly
toward MSI performance. Increasing on number of deposit, financial access, and
human development index give positive impact on small-size enterprise
performance, and negative impact on micro-size enterprise performance.
Meanwhile, tax policy gives negative impact on small-size enterprise
performance, and positive impact on micro-size enterprise performance. Other
economic variables used in this research do not influence significantly toward
MSI performance. Those are real interest rate, wage, number of employee, and
    number of enterprise.
