  • This book should answer most of the basic questions you have about birth control pills. After you have read this book, discuss questions with your health care provider. Tell her or him about any medical conditions you have, such a heart problems headaches, or breast cancer. This book is designed to help you have an informed discussion with your health care provider but not to replace her or his advice. The book has ten chapters. Chapter 1 is explains what the Pill is, how many women use it, where you can get it, benefits and drawbaks of using it as a method of birth control, and a brief history of its use. Chapter 2 is explains how the Pill works and describes the menstrual cycle and pregnancy. Chapter 3 is describes how health care provides screen for those rare situations where the Pill is not a safe method of birth control. It also discusses women with diabetes, women over 35, heavy smokers, and long-term users. Chapter 4 is describes the different types of birth control pills. Chapter 5 is explains how to strat taking the Pill, what to remember once you are on it, and what to do if you forget one on more pills. It explains how the Pill may interact with other drugs and reviews some special considerations including taking the Pill during hospitalization, eating properly, and getting pregnant after the Pill. Chapter 6 is describes the most common side effects, none of which are dangerous. Chapter 7 is explains rare side effects such as cardiovascular complications and current opinions about the risk of breast and other cancer. Chapter 8 is describes medical benefits the Pill may provide in addition to contraceptions. These include helping to relieve menstrual problems, treatment of endometriosis, and protection against some cancers and non-cancerous cysts. Chapter 9 is answers some of the most commonly asked question about the Pill. Chapter 10 is describes other methods of birth control, including newer methods such as Norplant, Depo-Provera, and the female condom.
