Human body is equipped with a complex immune system and its responses. There are two types of immune responses due to threats from pathogens and foreign substances; innate and adaptive immune response. Innate and adaptive responses involve functional immune cells with the aid of protein molecules (humoral). These immune response mechanisms are also available in the oral cavity concerning the oral mucosa, gingiva and teeth. There is no exception of tooth to be exposed by bacterial invasion. Hence, caries, a chronic infection of tooth, is caused by cariogenic bacteria such as S. mutans, S. sobrinus and Lactobacillus (most commonly identified) which indeed would cause immune defense reactions. This literature review focuses on immune response of dental pulp towards cariogenic pathogens with active cellular (odontoblast, dendritic cell, macrophage and other immune cells) and molecular interactions of immune responses. -
