Palatal rugae are ridges resulted from symmetrical and irregular mucosal folds of tissue and located in the alveolar third of the palate. The objective of this research is to find the palatal rugae pattern in Malaysian Malay adult population for identification purposes.
A descrptive study with consecutive sampling method used in this research on 22 Malaysian Malay studentss in Faculty of Dentistry, Padjadjaran University, batch 2012-2015. This research was done by making dental cast of the students maxillary jaw. Palatal rugae were observed and classified using Lycell classifiction, Martin Dos Santos classification, and Carrea classification.
The results shows that the most dominant rugae length is primary length (76.40%), most dominant rugae shape is sinuous shape (43.82%), and most dominant rugae direction is Type I (62.92%) found in the Malaysian Malay.
This study showed a dominant length and shapes and direction of rugae. Hence, the individuality and uniqueness of palatine rugae can be used as a tool for forensic dental identification. There is also a possibility that there are ethnic differences in rugal patterns. -
