  • The present volume describes some bioactives of plant origin. Inflammatory disorder is a common cause of morbidity around the globe. Inflammation is mediated through arachidonic acid metabolism by cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways. Inhibition of either or both the pathways would lead to anti-inflammatory effects. Biochemical pharmacology of anti-inflammatory plant metabolities has been described in the first article. One can competitively inhibit cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase by providing an alternate substrate like gamma linolenic acid. One article deals exclusively on the fatty acid. Cancer, a disease of unknown etiology, is the most common cause of death in the world population. Plant derived protein kinase modulator prooxidative properties of carotenoids (saffron), polyphenols or flavonoids could be of value in cancer chemotherapy ang few articles describe such possibilities. Curative effects of natural antioxidants like silymarin, emblicanin, rutin etc. has also been described. One review deals with isolation and pharmacology of biflavonoids of plant origin. Diabetes mellitus is a disease characterized by hyperglycaemea caused by lack of insulin. Potential of plant natural products including those used in Chinese traditional medicine, against diabetes, has been addressed alongwith some plant based sweeteners for diabetics. Essential oils are used by perfume, flavour and pharmaceutical industries. Some plant source of essential oil, their chemical composition, biological activities have been reviewed. Besides antifilarial, anti AIDS hepatoprotective activities of some plants have also been discussed. Other articles describe xanthone containing plants of Serbia, gum arabis, edible wild plants, and medicinal values of J. curcus, C. cajucara and silkworm plants. Antimicrobial substances of plant origin has also received due attention. Pharmaceutical industries dealing with herbal drugs, researchers in the field of natural products, pharmacy, pharmacology and biology could find this volume useful. The contributors are from Asia, Africa, Australia, Europa and Latin America, where some of the natural flora and fauna has survived against deforestation, and still exist.
