• Antivirals in The Elderly discuss article all of which is devoted to antiviral therapy in the elderly. Hayden in article 1 reviews influenza iilness, prophylaxis and treatment. The striking findings of reduced efficacy of influenza vaccine in the elderly, along with the need to encourage more effective use of oral prophylaxis with amantadine or rimantadine after flu vaccine administration and during flu outbreaks, make this a most timely contribution. Beutner in article 2 presents an update on antiviral therapy for herpes zoster. The importance of early recognition of shingles lesions, as well as timely treatment with one of three available oral antivirals, in reduction of postherpetic neuralgia is critical to optimal care of the elderly patient with this debilitating problem. Fletcher in article 3 concludes this volume with a thorough review of viral sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in the elderly. The greater morbidity of nonfatal STDs as well as earlier mortality of the older patient with AIDS prompt an increased index of suspicion of STDs in the elderly population.
