  • Erosion is a common dental problem faced by many especially in kids due to the increase in consumption of acidic food and beverages. APF gel is believed to be effective in decreasing demineralization effect of the teeth as well as increase remineralization process.
The aim of this research is to determine and evaluate the effectiveness of 1.23% APF gel as a preventive agent for erosion of tooth enamel especially in deciduous teeth.
This type of research is a true experimental research. A total amount of 5 maxillary primary central incisors were extracted and cleaned. All left side of the teeth is applied with APF gel for 4 minutes every hour repetitively whereas the right side is not applied with APF gel. Samples are then analyzed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM).
The results show that teeth not applied with APF gel has greater erosion as compared with teeth applied with APF gel. The tooth which is demineralized shows a honeycomb structure of the interprismatic enamel. as for the dentinal tubules, teeth not applied with APF gel has a bigger opening of dentinal tubules with the size up to 7.868 micrometers when compared with teeth applied with APF gel (1-2 micrometers).
It is concluded that the application of professional acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF) gel on deciduous teeth even when soaked in citric fruit extract, is proven effective in preventing dental erosion.
