  • Cheiloscopy is a forensic investigation technique that deals with identification of humans based on lips traces. The ability of a technique in differentiating the sex of a person in the field can help in screening a large number of suspects. The purpose of this study is to ascertain whether lip prints behold the potential for sex determination of an individual from the configuration in Chinese population.
The study was conducted on 48 subjects, which included 20 males and 28 females, in the age group of 18-25 years. The method of recording lip prints is by photography method and the lip prints at the central, most motile portions of the upper and lower lips were analyzed based on Suzuki and Tsuchihashi classification. The percentage of types of lip prints was calculated and tabulated.
The results showed that Type II lip prints pattern (branched grooves) was the predominant type in Chinese population. Type II were the most frequent in Chinese males (46.25%) for both upper and lower lips, while in Chinese females, Type III pattern was predominant (33.9%) on upper lip and Type I predominant on lower lip. The least common type of pattern was the same in males and females (Type IV Undetermined).
In conclusion, Type II pattern was most predominant in Chinese males and Type III lip prints pattern is predominant in female in Chinese population. Thus, lip prints can be the one of the human identification.
