  • Human identification is becoming gradually vital not only in legal medicine but also in criminal enquiries and identification. Cheiloscopy is the study of lip prints which is unique, individual and heritable. Thus, it can be used for personnel identification purposes.
The objective of this study is to describe the lip print patterns in children and their parents among Deutero-Malay population. Lip samples of 90 individuals including father, mother and a child from the same family were recorded using photography technique and the data obtained then analyzed using Adobe Photoshop CS3 software. Grooves and wrinkles of primary quadrants 2,3, 6 and 7 of lips are studied according to Suzuki and Tsuchihashis classification
In the present study, it is found that Type I (30.28%) is the most dominant lip print pattern and Type I (1.39%) is the least dominant among Deutero-Malay population. Besides, the resemblance of lip print pattern between mother and children is higher compared to father and children.
Based on this, we can conclude that lip print is inherited and dissimilar for every individual. Thus, this study can be used as a supporting research for future identification on lip prints.
