  • Cheiloscopy is an important tool used in forensic odontology for the identification of an individual. Lip prints can be used as an evidence when obtained from a crime scene because they are unique to an individual. This study is aimed to determine the description of lip print patterns among Chinese population using Renaud�s classification.
    A descriptive study was carried out on 90 Chinese individuals which consist of 45 males and 45 females. Lip print samples were taken by photography technique. After that, the photos of the sample were analyzed using Adobe Photoshop Software to study the primary quadrants using Renaud�s classification.
    The present study shows that Type B lip print pattern (incomplete vertical) was the most dominant type in both males and females among Chinese population. The most frequent type in both genders are Type B which are Chinese males (26.11%) and Chinese females (36.11%). For quadrant wise, the most dominant type of lip print pattern for male in quadrant 2 is Type B, quadrant 3 is Type J, quadrant 6 is Type G and quadrant 7 is Type G. On the other hand, the most dominant type of lip print pattern for females is Type B for quadrant 2, 3, 6 and 7.
    This research provides a preliminary idea about the usage of lip prints in the society and we can suggest that cheiloscopy can be used for race and sex determination of an individual.
