  • Introduction: Bruxism is the most common bad oral habit that is frequently observed among the special needs particularly in children with autistic disorder. The aim of this research is to determine the prevalence of bruxism among children with autistic disorder in Bandung. Method: This study used descriptive method by cross-sectional study. Thirty subjects aged between 4-12 years old were selected from four different autism centers in Bandung by purposive sampling method. Prevalence of bruxism among autistic children was studied by using questionnaire filled by parents and also by clinical examination of the attrition sign on the incisal tip of maxillary canines. Results: 15 children had positive results from questionnaire and were classified as possible sleep/awake bruxism. On the other hand, 18 children were classified as having probable sleep/awake bruxism for having positive results of clinical examination where attrition on the incisal tip of either one or both maxillary canines was observed. Discussion: Children with autistic disorder grind or clench their teeth most of the time when they are stress due to physical, mental and emotional factor. The most common symptom that can be observed due to bruxism is tooth attrition, resulting in flat edges of teeth. Conclusions: Prevalence of possible sleep/awake bruxism among children with autistic disorder in Bandung was 50.00% while prevalence of probable sleep/awake bruxism was 60.00%.
