  • Introduction: Smoking behavior has increasing among women worldwide. Smoking has an impact on general and oral health. Smoking habits can cause a decrease in salivary secretions. The aim of this study is to determine the difference of rate of saliva secretion between smoking and non-smoking groups, specifically in women. Method: This descriptive type of research was carried out. The data obtained are secondary data from Unpad Fundamental Research (RFU). The samples are collected by using consecutively sampling where 44 people are smoking women and 91 people are non-smoking women. The subjects for both smoking and non-smoking women age between 19-35 years old and the smoking women experience at least two years of smoking habits. The saliva collection as the primary data was performed by using spitting method and the saliva that had been collected after 5 minutes and measured by using formula volume of saliva is divided by time (ml/min). A normality and homogeneity test had shown that the data was homogen and normally distributed. Independent T test was used to test the difference between two groups. Result: The results showed that rate of saliva secretion was significantly different (0,44 ml/min, 0.52 ml/min, p=0.0367). The rate of saliva secretion in smoking women who smoked 2 years and above lower compared to non-smoking women which are 0.44ml / min and 0.53ml / min respectively. Women who smoked more than 10 cigarettes per day have lower rate of saliva secretion (0.47ml / min) compared to the non-smoking women (0.53ml / min). Conclusion: From the present study, it can be concluded that the rate of saliva secretion in smoking women is lower than the non-smoking women where the risk of oral and dental disorders associated with xerostomia are high. This study showed that the longer duration of smoking and the higher smoking dosage, increased the rate of saliva secretion in women but lower compared to non-smoking group.
