  • Introduction: Cleft lip and palate is a face and oral anomaly that often occurs,
which the goal of its multidisciplinary management is reduction of cleft severity
before primary surgery. Nasoalveolar molding (NAM) treatment combined with
lip taping yield a controlled movement of alveolar segment. The purpose of this
study is to evaluate the effectiveness of NAM with lip taping treatment on
reducing alveolar gap in cleft lip and palate patients. Method: This rapid review
was done on articles searched with PubMed, CINAHL, Google Scholar, and
snowballing technique up to January 2021. Articles identification and screening
was performed by duplication, title and abstract, and full-text inspection.
Outcome: A total of 5 eligible articles were included for this study. All included
articles showed a statistically significant cleft width reduction in NAM with lip
taping group. 3 articles found a more significant mean difference in NAM with lip
taping group compared to without NAM with lip taping group, and 2 articles
found a more significant mean difference in NAM with lip taping group compared
to Hotz’s plate group. Conclusion: NAM with lip taping proved to be effective in
reducing alveolar gap before primary surgery in cleft lip and palate patients.
Keywords: Nasoalveolar molding, NAM, lip taping, alveolar gap, cleft width
