  • Introduction: Biting behavior is one of the destructive behaviors that possibly
occur to an individual with psychological disorders. This study analyzed biting
behavior as a manifestation of psychological conditions. Methods: This study
analyzed biting behaviors and psychological conditions from 220 samples of
undergraduate dental students of the dentistry program, Universitas Padjadjaran,
Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. The samples were calculated through the
Purposive Non-Random Sampling and were selected based on the inclusion and
exclusion criteria. Three classifications of psychological disorders that were
measured using a DASS-21 scale were stress, depression, and anxiety, while the
biting questionnaire was used to obtain information about the existence, duration,
location, frequency, and impact of biting behavior which was then tabulated and
also presented in graphs. Result: Most of the subjects experienced psychological
disorders of depression and anxiety with biting behavior which was done mostly on
body parts with a fast duration and frequency lesser than three times a week. There
were 52 of 220 subjects that were feeling relieved after the biting behavior was
done. Conclusion: Biting behavior could be found in a female subject mostly with
‘extremely severe stage’ of depression or anxiety which was done mostly on body
parts with duration, frequencies, and impact of biting behavior that were varied
based on the psychological conditions that were experienced.
Keywords: biting behavior, stress, depression, anxiety, psychological conditions
