  • Purpose: This study aims to determine the amount of distortion of the intraoral bitewing,
panoramic bitewing program, and periapical radiographs in detecting the proximal cavity
using Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) as a reference. Materials and
Methods: For extracted human permanent teeth were radiographed using a phosphor
plate system (Origo Express, Instrumentarium Dental, Tuusula, Finland) with digital
intraoral bitewing and parallel periapical techniques. The panoramic bitewing program
and CBCT were obtained using the Digital Panoramic and CBCT OrthopantomographTM
X-ray unit, OP300 Maxio (Instrumentarium Dental, Tuusula, Finland). All images were
evaluated three times using Fiji ImageJ software. In total, eight proximal surfaces were
assessed. The horizontal distance, vertical distance, and cavity area were calculated.
Scores obtained from all three techniques were compared with the gold standard of CBCT
using Pearson correlation analysis. Results: The strongest correlation in the horizontal
distance variation A was 0.728 for the intraoral bitewing, at the vertical distance and area
of 0.632 and 0.869 for the periapical. While in variation B, the strongest correlation is at
a horizontal distance of 0.670, vertical of 0.341, and area of 0.916 for panoramic (p
