  • Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic raises public anxiety and fear of being infected with
the COVID-19 virus, as the result has an impact in limited accessibility and delays to the
dentist. This causes the decreasing status of dental and oral health, which also affects the
spread of dental and oral health diseases, especially in most cases, caries. This study describes
the spread of dental caries at RSGM Unpad patients before and during the COVID-19
pandemic. Methods: This study was descriptive cross-sectional with 74 samples of patients by
purposive sampling technique. The study used secondary data from medical records to value
of DMF-T index and questionnaires of lifestyle and caries indicators for primary data. Results:
The DMF-T index before the COVID-19 pandemic was 3,64 and during the COVID-19
pandemic was 6,08. Based on the questionnaire results, 63,5% of respondents went to the
dentist during the COVID-19 pandemic, most of the patients went to the dentist when there was
pain (56,7%), and 72,9% had difficulty of access treatment to the dentist. During the COVID19 pandemic, there were an increased number of caries (94,6%) and a number in consumption
of sweets (59,5%). Conclusion: The spread of dental caries of patients at RSGM Unpad before
the COVID-19 pandemic was medium criteria and became high criteria during the COVID-19
pandemic. The difficulty of accessing treatment to the dentists, the assumption to go to the
dentist when there was pain, and increased consumption of sweets food, could trigger the
spread of caries during the COVID-19 pandemic.
