  • Objectives: This scoping review aimed to map and compile the available studies
that discuss SARS-CoV-2 infection through the oral mucosa. Data: We selected a
study written in English and published in 2019-2021 that discussed SARS-CoV-2
infection through the oral mucosa. Source: Pubmed, Sage Journals, Science Direct,
Wiley Online Library, and Google Scholar. Study Selections: 25 papers included
in this scoping review consisted of review article (n=8), experimental study (n=6),
literature review (n=3), systematic review (n=2), narrative review (n=2), critical
review, research study, cohort study, and case study (n=1). Conclusion: Evidence
regarding the presence of causative factors for SARS-CoV-2 infection (ACE2,
TMPRSS2, and furin) in the oral cavity has been identified resulting in the oral
mucosa as a high-risk site for SARS-CoV-2 infection and a gateway for lower
    respiratory tract infections.
Keywords: COVID-19, mucosa, oral cavity, SARS-CoV-2
