  • Introduction: Dental pain is one of the most common symptoms of dental and oral
    problems that can generally be identified through verbal self-reports, but it is an
    obstacle for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) who have social
    communication deficits. Dental pain in children with ASD can be detected through
    specific behavioral changes. This study aimed to determine the dental pain behavior
    of children with ASD at Biruku Foundation, Bandung City. Methods: This
    descriptive method study used a cross-sectional design approach. The sample of
    the study was children with ASD who had been diagnosed by pediatricians as type
    HFA or LFA, and were experiencing dental caries as a factor causing dental pain,
    which were seen through examination with a total of 12 children obtained using a
    total sampling technique. Data collection procedure was done by conducting the
    Dental Discomfort Questionnaire (DDQ). Results: High DDQ score was found in
    3 children (25%), a moderate DDQ score was found in 7 children (58.3%), low
    DDQ score was found in 2 children (16.7%). The most frequent dental pain
    behavior shown by children with ASD at Biruku Foundation was produce more
    saliva (8.8%) Conclusion: Dental pain behavior in children with ASD at Biruku
    Foundation, Bandung city is in the moderate category.
