  • Introduction Periodontal disease is one of the most common diseases in
Indonesia. Based on Riskesdas (2018), 7 out of 10 might have periodontitis in
Indonesia. Periodontitis happen while there is inflammatory process in periodontal
tissue which initiate by anaerobic bacteria and if the process keep on going, toothloss may occurs . However, the damage caused by periodontitis is likely believed
due to the response from the host inflammatory mediators itself. This study aimed
to examine the effect of omega – 3 fatty acids as HMT agents of non – surgical
adjunctive therapy in the treatment of chronic periodontitis. Method: : Search the
articles from Snowball searching and also using the exact same keywords ((omega
3 fatty acid) AND ((periodontal therapy)) OR (nonsurgical periodontal therapy))
AND ((chronic periodontitis)) through PubMed, Cochrane Library, Google
Scholar and Livivo. The assessment for Risk of Bias using Cochrane Risk of Bias
Tool for RCT and the extraction using PRISMA guidelines. Results: A total of six
articles finally met the criteria to be assessted for ROB. Four articles had low risk
of bias and two others had high risk of bias. Most of articles showed significant
reduction according to clinical parameters such as PD, CAL and GI as well as any
other additional parameters.. Conclusions: Omega – 3 fatty acids can be the HMT
agent as an adjuctive therapy for chronic periodontitis due to its ability of reducing
inflammation. However, its effect as and anti – inflammatory agent has no yet been
    seen through clinical parameters
Keywords: Omega – 3 fatty acid, Host Modulation Therapy, Chronic periodontitis
