  • Cheiloscopy is a developing method in the identification process. The purpose of this research is to discover the similarities and differences in the lip print pattern through the photograph taken using two techniques which are frontal view and oblique view. This research uses a new approach of lip photography which is the oblique view which most resembling the three-dimension nature of the lips.
A total of 150 co-assistant dental students from the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Padjadjaran were selected through the inclusion criteria. The subject was asked to sit relax and hold an ABFO scale. The photograph was taken using a DSLR camera placed at a distance of 0.5m, from 0 degree angle frontal view and 45 degree angle oblique view. The lip print will be detected using ImageJ software. Then, lip pattern is analyzed according to Suzuki and Tsuchihashi classification.
The statistical analysis results in similarities with 94% for frontal and oblique view, 91% right frontal and right oblique view, and 93% for left frontal and left oblique view. However, the visualization of quadrant one, four, five and eight are not clear from the frontal view since they are not the primary quadrants. Hence, the oblique view comes in handy where the visualization of quadrant one, four, five and eight is clearer and precise compared to the frontal view.
From this study, it can be concluded that almost all the lip print pattern shows similar results from frontal and oblique views, and it is unique for every individual.
