  • Individual identification is crucial for many reasons including personal, social, legal and humanitarian. Cheiloscopy is an investigation technique in forensic science that deals with the study of lip prints as identification of people.
    A descriptive study was carried out in 30 Chinese family samples consisting of a father, mother and 2 biologically related children. Lip prints samples were taken by means of photography with a digital camera. After that, the sample photos were transferred into the laptop to be observed for the resemblance of lip print types in the families and classified using Tsuchihashi�s Classification.
    The present study shows that there is a positive resemblance of lip print pattern of 52.5% among Chinese parents and their children. In comparison of the siblings, 46.67% resemblances is seen in the families. Among the samples, Type III lip print (39.79%) is the most prevalent and Type V lip print (5.63%) is rarest among the sample of 30 families.
    Lip print can serve as a secondary supplementary data in forensic odontology. This research provides a preliminary idea about the usage of lip print in the society and we can suggest that cheiloscopy may be used in paternity and racial determination of an individual.
